Obtaining Certified Copies of Marriage Certificates

The California Department of Public Health – Vital Records (CDPH-VR) can ONLY provide certified copies of certificates for public marriages that occurred in the years:

1905 to 1999, 2001

2008 to 2025

CDPH-VR is not able to provide certified copies of certificates for the years 2000 and 2002 through 2007. Please contact the County Recorder’s Office in the county where the marriage license was issued. CDPH-VR is continually indexing marriage records and will post updates on the website as more years become available for request.

Mail In Request

Please submit the following for a mail in request:

Application for Certified Copy of Marriage Certificate (PDF) (VS 113A) form
Cómo Obtener Copias Certificadas de Registros de Matrimonio (PDF) (VS 113A SP) form

Notarized Sworn Statement (VS 20) form

Located within the application
Only required if requesting an authorized copy

Check/Money Order for $19.00 per copy, payable to "CDPH-VR".

CDPH-VR does not maintain records of confidential marriages. Certified copies of confidential marriage records are only available from the County Clerk’s Office in the county where the confidential marriage license was issued. Only the two individuals named on the marriage certificate can obtain copies of confidential marriage records.

To request a copy of a sealed record, please mail in a CDPH 9126 application (PDF). For Mail-In Requests only.

In Person Request

Copies may be obtained in person at the county office where the marriage was registered. Please view our County Registrar and Recorder directory to request a copy of a marriage record from the county office.
