The Vital Records Issuance Branch (VRIB) preserves records of vital events occurring in California since 1905. VRIB serves Californians with the issuance of certified copies and registration of amendments to vital records.

VRIB is entrusted with:

• Maintaining permanent indices of birth, death, fetal death, still birth, marriage, and dissolution records for California vital events.

• Preserving over 45 million records with over one million vital events added annually.

• Registering an average of 60,000 amendments to California vital records annually.

• Issuing an average of 200,000 certified copies of registered California vital records annually.​

• Complying with state and federal laws to protect the integrity of California’s vital records.​​
