The Adolescent Family Life Program (AFLP) is a strengths-based case management program with integrated life planning. The program supports pregnant and parenting youth in building resilience strengths and skills to thrive. Case managers meet one-on-one with youth to establish a caring relationship, identify the youthā€™s needs, and offer support accessing services, setting goals and building skills to manage life challenges and plan for the future.

At the end of 10th grade, Evelyn found herself pregnant and scared. Her partner at the time was not supportive or interested in becoming a parent, and she had to tell her parents she was pregnant on her own. She knew they wouldn't be happy with the news. Seeking outside guidance, Evelyn enrolled in AFLP.

When Brenda first learned she was pregnant, she wasn't prepared to be a mother. Her parents had come from Mexico to give their children a brighter future. For Brenda, becoming a mom at 17 threatened that dream.

Like many moms, Sandra has become an expert juggler. She moves from school to job to swing set with ease. Son Jacob shares kisses and high fives each time he swings toward his mom. Sandra is working hard to achieve the education, career and parenting goals she has set for herself as a participant in AFLP.

ā€œIf it werenā€™t for Monica, I donā€™t think Iā€™d be in school anymore,ā€ says Briseyda, a young mom and future high school graduate who is taking the steps she needs to build a strong future for herself and her baby. This might not have been possible without the state-funded AFLP run by the Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara County, which connected Briseyda with case manager, Monica.

On the brink of fatherhood, Alejandro realized he and his family needed additional support. That's when he was referred to his local AFLP agency in LA County. His case manager Liliana, provided him the emotional support and life planning skills he needed during this time of transition.

Maria's senior year of high school differed from those of her peers. She discovered she was pregnant and kept it a secret while continuing cheerleading and Zumba. "Because my pregnancy was hidden, I was in a bad place," Maria recalls.
