About Us

The Research & Analytics Branch (RAB) provides access to essential health data and statistical resources that support public health research, policy development, community health assessments, and public inquiries. Our work serves government agencies, academic institutions, private researchers, and the general public.

To support the State Registrar in responsible, transparent data management. We provide and safeguard high-quality data that empowers Californians to make informed public health decisions.

Core Services and Programs

RAB delivers a combination of data services and program oversight that help shape California’s public health landscape:

Vital Statistics & Data Analytics

Provides Vital Statistics & Data Analytics Resources and Services

Provides access to vital statistics datasets and data products.
Processes and reviews Vital Statistics Application (VSA) data requests.
Compiles and maintains birth, death, and fetal death data sourced from electronic birth and death record systems.
Supports and coordinates activities related to the Vital Statistics Advisory Committee (VSAC).
Responds to data inquiries from public health programs, researchers, and external requesters.

End of Life Option Act

Responsibilities Under the End of Life Option Act (EOLA)

Receives and records required reporting forms from participating physicians.
Maintains the secure online portal for electronic submission of EOLA forms.
Publishes the annual EOLA report as required by statute, supporting transparency while upholding strict privacy and confidentiality standards for terminally ill adults accessing end-of-life options.
