Preconception Health

Preconception health is a critical component of health care for women of reproductive age. The main goal of preconception health is to improve the physical, emotional and social well-being of women before and between pregnancies in California to ensure healthy babies are born today and for future generations to come. Optimal preconception health is achieved not only through effective clinical care for women but also through collaboration with individuals, systems and communities to change knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to reproductive health.

The Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Division is partnering with organizations and stakeholders across the state to provide direction for the integration of preconception health into public health practice and promote preconception health messages to women of reproductive age.
