Online/Distance Learning Nurse Assistant Training Program (NATP)

Facility NATP Director of Staff Development or Educational Institution Instructor Information

NATP Director of Staff Development (DSD) means a California licensed Registered Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse who is approved by the Department, who meets the requirement as described below and is employed by or under contract with a nursing facility.

NATP Instructor means a California licensed Registered Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse employed by an educational institution who, when teaching a NATP, meets the Department's qualifications for a Director of Staff Development.

DSD or Instructor Application Requirements

The Department may take as long as 60 days to process a DSD or Instructor application. The provider is responsible to apply for and hire qualified staff. The provider must use the form CDPH E279 to apply on behalf of their candidate. An application must be made for any DSD or Instructor who has not been associated with the provider's online NATP.

Both NATP facility DSDs and educational Institution Instructors must meet the following requirements to be approved by the Department.

  • The candidate must possess a current or active California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • The candidate must have two years of experience as a licensed nurse.
  • One of the two years must be in providing care and services to chronically ill or elderly patients in an acute care hospital, skilled nursing facility, intermediate care facility, home care, hospice care, or other long-term care setting.
  • And one of the two below:
    • The candidate must have one year of experience planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs in nursing;

                      OR

    • The candidate must possess 24 hours of continuing education certificate(s) in planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs in nursing. These courses must either be approved by the Board of Registered Nursing or be administered by an accredited educational institution and the certificate(s) must be obtained within six months of employment and prior to teaching in a training program.

NATP DSD or Instructor Update Application Requirements

Facilities are responsible to notify the Department within 30 days of any DSD or instructor hire.

  • For every newly hired DSD or Submit a CDPH E279, along with a resume which describes how the candidate meets the above qualifications, attach the training certificate (if necessary) and email to eLearning@cdph.ca.gov.  

NATP DSD or Instructor Renewal Requirements

  • Online NATP programs need not renew their DSDs or Instructors every two years. However, if a previously approved DSD or Instructor leaves their current employment for another NATP, the new NATP must apply on their behalf and the DSDs or Instructors must requalify. This may include having a current CE certificate within 6 months of hire as described above.
