Criteria

Healthcare-associated organisms are routed to MDL for Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) and data generated is used for public health surveillance and epidemiologic investigations only. Sequence data is uploaded to NCBI. Reports released by MDL is used for surveillance and epidemiologic investigations only.

Yes. Consultation with the Molecular Characterization Unit is required prior to submission of specimens

Request for WGS testing is submitted using LWP. Submitters that do not have an account on ETOR, contact MDL.Submissions@CDPH.ca.gov for requesting WGSR form.

Room Temp: Store at ambient temperature (15Ā°Cā€“ā€‹ā€‹28Ā°C)
Frozen: -20Ā°C in storage media

Rejection Criteria

 

  • Specimen submitted without submission form. 
  • Mixed culture and not pure isolate.
  • Cracked and leaking specimen tube. 
  • Isolates received on plates are not acceptable. Agar slants and motility tubes acceptable.

Storage/Transport Conditions

Room Temp: Store at ambient temperature. Ship at ambient temperature.
Frozen: -20Ā°C in storage media. Ship frozen using dry ice
Transport Medium,
if applicable

Ship or transport cultures on nonselective nutrient or similar agar in tubes with leak-proof screw cap closures.
Specimen Labeling Two identifiers, including patient full name, and at least one other identifier (specimen accession number, DOB, MRN); date and time of collection as noted for specific tests, if applicable.

Shipping Instructions and Specimen Handling Requirements

Ship [cold pack / frozen / ambient temperature] using appropriate DOT/IATA approved shipping procedures.

Ensure that culture isolates are sent in media flask or tubes containing a screw-top cap that is additionally sealed with parafilm or tape for additional protection against leaking.
