COVID-19 Medications are Free and Widely Available, but Underutilized. COVID-19 medications are effective for stopping COVID-19 illness from getting serious. By stopping the virus from multiplying in your body, they can prevent severe COVID-19 complications including hospitalization and death, may lead you to test negative sooner, and may lower the risk of long COVID. While vaccines and boosters remain the frontline of defense against COVID-19, all Californians 12 years and older who have COVID-19 with symptoms should seek evaluation for COVID-19 medications, which are widely available and free statewide, regardless of insurance or citizenship status. Most of the medications must be taken within the first 5 days of symptoms, so if you feel sick, act fast to get a COVID-19 test and seek COVID-19 medications if you test positive.
