Group of Diverse individuals

The California Pathways into Public Health (Pathways) Fellowship Program is a paid training program for people interested in starting a career in public health.
The program provides fellows the opportunity to gain entry-level public health experience by working at a local health department in California, while also building proficiency in core skills and competencies that support their ability to deliver the 10 Essential Public Health Services (EPHS).

Upon completing the 13-month program, fellows have applied for positions with local health departments and other public health agencies or pursued a higher education in public health.

Learn more details about the program’s training opportunities and support on our Fellowship Overview page.

*Please note: Individuals in possession of an advanced public health degree - such as an MPH or PhD/DrPH - are considered less likely to need a program like Pathways in order to launch their public health career. Please reach out to us at CalPPHFellowship@cdph.ca.gov if you have further questions.

Fellow Testimonials

“This program literally gave me a second life. I had no clue how big public health is and now I have a second career that I didn't realize I needed in my life. I have so much gratitude for this program.”

“The strengths of my local health jurisdiction host site are that it has helped me build a strong network to help the community I grew up in. I feel that the team/staff I work with are collaborative. Additionally, I have appreciated how most of the staff I work with have been very open and encouraging of new and creative ideas within public health.”

“The continuing education sessions are the greatest strengths of the program. These sessions helped me feel a sense of community with the Cal-PPH program. I felt connected to the fellows and staff throughout my time in the program. I'm amazed by the amount of presenters that were recruited for these sessions, the Cal-PPH program offers great networking connections.”
