SUBJECT:
Senate Bill (SB) 449 ā€“ CNA Training Program Requirement Changes

ā€‹AUTHORITY:      Health and Safety Code (HSC) section 1337.1

All Facilities Letter (AFL) Summary

This AFL notifies CNA training programs of the chaptering of SB 449, which requires that at least two of the mandatory 60 classroom hours of classroom training for CNAs address the special needs of persons with Alzheimerā€™s disease and related dementias.

Effective January 1, 2018, SB 449 (Chapter 282, Statutes of 2017) requires CNA training programs to devote at least two hours of the 60 hours of classroom training to the special needs of persons with Alzheimerā€™s disease and related dementias. This instruction is in addition to the existing regulation requiring two classroom hours be devoted to the needs of persons with developmental and mental disorders.

For questions, please contact the Training Program Review Unit by email at TPRU@cdph.ca.gov.

CDPHā€™s failure to expressly notify facilities of statutory or regulatory requirements does not relieve facilities of their responsibility for following all laws and regulations. Facilities should refer to the full text of all applicable sections of HSC and the California Code of Regulations to ensure compliance.
