How to Become a WIC Authorized Farmer

The California Department of Public Health/Women, Infants and Children Division (CDPH/WIC) trains, authorizes, and monitors California farmers who accept monthly WIC fruits and vegetable benefits (CVB) and seasonal WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) benefits. These farmers are also automatically authorized to participate in the California Department of Food and Agriculture Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program​.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible farmers include those who:

  • Grow fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Farmers who sell honey only are eligible for the Senior FMNP but not WIC.
  • Maintain a current, valid Certified Producer’s Certificate (CPC) with the Office of the County Agricultural Commissioner.
  • Sell the produce they grow at a minimum of one WIC authorized farmers’ market.

Authorization Process

  1. Obtain Certified Producer’s Certificate (CPC).
  2. Complete the Farmer Application and Agreement​ (PDF)​.
  3. Complete and submit application and copy of first page of CPC to wicfmnp@cdph.ca.gov.
  4. Attend interactive training (required for first-time farmers only). You will receive an email from wicvendored@cdph.ca.gov to schedule the training.
  5. CDPH/WIC authorizes farmer and sends Notice of Authorization and authorization Signs.
  6. After authorization, farmer can accept benefits.
