Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMT) Continuing Education Information
Every five years, California certified nuclear medicine technologists are required to submit, via mail, a renewal application, a renewal fee, and evidence of continuing education credits (CEC). (Title 17, California Code of Regulations (17 CCR) section 30536(c).) Renewal applications are mailed out about 90 days prior to the expiration date of your certificate. If you did not receive a billing renewal notice, you may use a Special Renewal Application. The required amount and type of CEC depends on the scopes authorized on your certificate.
How many CEC do I need to complete?
NMTs are required to submit five (5) CEC per authorized scope on their certificate. The
scopes are:
- Imaging (I)
- Diagnostic nuclear medicine technology procedures involving imaging, including venipuncture.
- Non-Imaging (NI)
- Diagnostic in vivo and in vitro tests involving measurement of uptake, dilution, or excretion, including venipuncture, but not involving imaging.
- Radiopharmacy (R)
- Use of generators and reagent kits for preparation of radioactive material.
- Therapy (T)
- Internal radioactive material therapy.
If your certificate states you are authorized for All Scopes, the total number of CECs required is 20.
What is an acceptable CEC?
- All CEC must have been completed in the five years immediately preceding the expiration date of your certificate.
- The Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) is a recognized credentialing body for continuing education activities pertaining to nuclear medicine.
- Credits will be categorized into ‘scope’ categories: Imaging (I), Non-Imaging (NI), Radiopharmacy (R), or Therapy (T), according to the content of the activity.
- ASRT Members:
- ASRT nuclear medicine credits are acceptable for renewals, however, not all ASRT’s courses award nuclear medicine credits, so please verify with ASRT before submitting their CEC for your nuclear medicine certificate renewal.
- If a course awards nuclear medicine credit, it will be listed on the completion certificate as “CA – NucMed” followed by the scope category (I, NI, R, T)
