The Reduction Chamber Program in the Environmental Management Branch is responsible for developing rules and regulations concerning the manufacture, sale, and use of reduction chambers in the death-care industry, as authorized by Assembly Bill 351 (Garcia, Chapter 399, Statutes of 2022). Reduction chambers are containers or vessels that hold human remains during the reduction process. Reduction is a new disposition method for use by end-of-life professionals, joining burial, cremation, and alkaline hydrolysis. The Department will start accepting applications from Reduction Chamber manufactures and sellers on January 1, 2027, for use in California.
