California vital statistics data originates from birth, death, and fetal death certificates. This information is collected through electronic registration systems at local hospitals, funeral homes, coroner's offices, and local registrars' offices.

To protect privacy, counts of less than eleven have been masked, following the
CHHS Data De-Identification Guidelines (PDF) requirements of the
CHHS Data.

California Vital Data Tool
The
California Vital Data (Cal-ViDa) tool can be used to create a variety of birth and death reports. Users can generate reports with statewide counts, as well as counts by county, city, or ZIP code. Reports also include selected demographic details (e.g., race/ethnicity and education level) and health indicators (e.g., birthweight and cause of death).
