Update: In October 2023, Governor Newsom signed into law a state-wide ban in California on the sale of mattresses and upholstered furniture that contain fiberglass. The ban will begin on January 1, 2027.ā
ā
The California Depāartmeānt of Puāblic Health (CDPH) investigated a casāāe where a child's skin and breathing were harmāed by fiberglass that came out of their mattress.
Many people have filed complaints about fiberglass coming out of mattresses to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
CDPH tested four twin and baby mattresses and found fiberglass in two of the mattresses.ā
Fiberglass is made of thin glass fibers. The glass fibers are sometimes woven into a cloth.
Glass fibers are stiff and break easily. They can break into tiny pieces and settle into dust.
Fiberglass is used in some mattresses to prevent them from catching on fire. Fiberglass is used instead of chemicals as a fire retardant.

āāContact with fiberglass can irritate the eyes and skin.
Breathing in tiny pieces of fiberglass can irritate the nose, throat, and lungs and cause breathing problems.ā
Warniāng:
Read the mattress label to see if it contains fiberglass. Fiberglass may be called āglass fiber" on a mattress label.
Be aware of mattress brands that have received public complaints about fiberglass coming out of their mattresses.
āSee complaints reported to the Consumer Safety Product Commission (www.saferproducts.gov/PublicSearch). Enter the words āmattress and fiberglass" in the search bar.
āāCaution:
CDPH found fiberglass in the Zinus 6ā Green Team Memory Foam twin mattress and the Graco Crib & Toddler Deluxe mattress. Fiberglass was not listed on the Graco label.
āāāYou cannot know for sure if a mattress has fiberglass inside of it. Keep the outer cover of a mattress sealed shut.
Never unzip a mattress cover.
If a mattress cover has a tear that cannot be repaired, get rid of the mattress.ā
āProtect yourself. When cleaning up fiberglass, wear eye safety goggles, a mask that covers your nose and mouth, and loose-fitting clothing that covers the skin.
Remove the mattress. If fiberglass comes out of your mattress, you will probably need to get rid of the mattress. Cover the mattress before you remove it to reduce the spread of glass fibersā.
Clean the area well. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Do not sweep. Doing so can spread glass fibers and push them into the air. Wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth.
Wash sheets, blankets, and clothes separately from other laundry. Consider washing each item separately. After each wash, rinse the washing machine thoroughly to remove remaining glass fibers. If the glass fibers are difficult to remove from sheets, blankets, or clothes, throw out these items.
