Infant Formula Information for Health Care Providers Man holding baby

On August 1, 2022, the standard contract WIC formulas changed for WIC participants.

The standard contract formulas for the California Department of Public Health/Women, Infants and Children Division (CDPH/WIC) currently include:

  Milk-based formulas:
  • Similac Advance,
  • Similac Sensitive,
  • Similac Total Comfort
  Soy-based formula:
  • Enfamil ProSobee (no change)
WIC provides contracted formulas as part of an agreement that is a federally mandated cost containment system. In accordance with federal regulations, all WIC formula fed infants may receive any one of the standard contract formulas below with a prescription.

More information on WIC formula contracts and the WIC program can be found on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) website.

 2022 Infant Formula Shortages

During the periodic infant formula shortages in 2022, CDPH/WIC added more formula products to the WIC Authorized Product List, which gave families more purchasing choices when the standard contract formulas were not available at the store. These temporary formula flexibilities were granted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

On December 19, 2022, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the plan to end the temporary expanded WIC formula options in three phases, starting on March 1, 2023.

Information for WIC families on infant formula availability can be found on our MyFamily website

If you have questions about your patient's infant formula benefits, contact your patient's WIC local agency.
