The California Pregnancy-Associated Review Committee (CA-PARC) encompasses all CDPHā€™s programs for tracking and investigating maternal deaths during and up to one year after pregnancy.

The California Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System (CAā€‹ā€‹-Pā€‹ā€‹MSS) aims to provide timely and accurate statewide surveillance of maternal mortality through ā€‹enhanced case identification methodology and rapid-cycle case reviews by an expert committee.

The California Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review (CA-PAMR) aims to identify contributing factors, clinical quality improvement and public health strategies, and preventability through in-depth case reviews by one or more committees of clinical and community experts. Findings from CA-PAMR inform actionable recommendations for preventing maternal deaths and reducing health inequities.

The California Health & Safety Code Ā§ 123636 (2022) grants CA-PARC with authority to procure all necessary data to carry out comprehensive maternal mortality case reviews and analysis of the common indicators of severe maternal morbidity, ensures the confidentiality of the case review proceedings, and provides legal protections for committee members.ā€‹
