The mission of the Environmental Health Specialist Registration Program is dedicated to optimizing the health and well being of the people of California by regulating the practice of Registered Environmental Health Specialists. The Environmental Health Specialist Registration Program was established by the Legislature in 1945 to assure that persons who perform activities related to environmental health protection meet specific standards of education, training, and experience, thus ensuring professional competency.  The program is responsible for reviewing applications for registration, conducting examinations, issuing registrations and renewals, reviewing and approving local government Registered Environmental Health Specialists (REHS) intern training programs, investigating complaints against persons registered by the program, and developing registration revocation actions.  In addition, the program is mandated to review the curricula of universities in California that offer degrees in environmental health to ensure that they meet specific educational requirements. The Environmental Health Specialist Registration Program is responsible for assuring that persons working in the profession meet minimum educational, training and experience requirements (California Health and Safety Code, Section 106600 et seq.) can be found on the CDPH REHS Website.ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹
