Insect Repellent Toolkit

Don't give bugs a biting chance! Use insect repellent to protect yourself!

Mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas can be found throughout California, and these insects bite! You can help prevent insect bites and the spread of diseases carried by mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas by using insect repellent.

What is insect repellent?

Insect repellent is a product used to keep insects from biting you and possibly spreading viruses or bacteria that cause diseases, such as West Nile virus and Lyme disease. Different types of repellents, such as lotions or sprays, are used on skin and clothing to keep insects away. Repellents do not kill insects. The active ingredients in repellent products work by blocking an insect’s ability to “smell” you. If an insect cannot smell you, it will have a harder time finding and biting you. There are different types of active ingredients used in repellent products.
