April 2024 Occupational Health Watch

Upcoming Construction Safety Stand-Downs

This year, plan for not one but two National Safety Stand-Downs. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), along with its partners, is raising awareness of fall hazards and struck-by incidents ā€“ injuries or fatalities caused by moving objects in work and lift zones.ā€‹

The Occupational Health Branch (OHB) encourages all employers to pause work and emphasize safe work practices during these upcoming Stand-Downs, and all year long. The 5th annual National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents is taking place April 15ā€“19. There will be free webinars on work zone safety, lift zone/heavy equipment safety, and dropped objects. The event website offers safety resources to raise awareness and highlights what employers can do to prevent struck-by incidents.

The 11th annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction is May 6ā€“10. Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction workers. Prevention materials, including worker handouts, toolbox talks, infographics, videos, and posters are available on the One Stop Stand-Down Shop.
