The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is an independent, not-for-profit, physician-led organization that sets and monitors the professional educational standards essential in preparing physicians to deliver safe, high-quality medical care to all Americans.

The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) is a professional society for physicians dedicated to prevention. ACPM provides leadership in research, professional education, development of public policy, and enhancement of standards of preventive medicine for and on behalf of our members.

The purpose of the American Board of Preventive Medicine is to grant and issue, to qualified physicians who are licensed to practice medicine, certificates of special knowledge in Preventive Medicine and in one of the specialty areas of Aerospace Medicine, Occupational Medicine or Public Health and General Preventive Medicine or in one of the subspecialties of Medical Toxicology or Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine; and to encourage the study, enhance the standards of practice, and advance the cause of Preventive Medicine.

The American Association of Public Health Physicians (AAPHP) was founded in 1954. Its initial purpose was to serve as the voice of physician directors of state and local health departments at the national level. Since its inception, AAPHP has been recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as a medical specialty society, with formal representation in the AMA House of Delegates. AAPHP's objectives now include advocacy on behalf of all public health physicians, whether employed in public or private settings, or academia. Current major issues include tobacco control, injury prevention, public health surveillance, disease control, correctional (prison/jail) health, policy and management training, workforce issues, and issues pertaining to access to health care, health equity, health disparities, cultural competence and preventive services.

California Academy of Preventive Medicine (CAPM) is the official state society for California physicians specializing in the specialty of "General Preventive Medicine and Public Health." It also welcomes physicians specializing in either of the other two specialties certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine: Occupational Medicine, and Aerospace Medicine. CAPM engages in educational and scientific activities, support for these specialties, and promotion of public policies and legislation that enhance public health and disease prevention and control in California. Board-certified physicians may become Fellows, others who are working in one of these fields, but not Board-certified, may become general members.

The California Medical Board is a state government agency which licenses and disciplines physicians, surgeons and certain allied healthcare professions in California. The Board provides two principal types of services to consumers: (1) public-record information about California-licensed physicians, and (2) investigation of complaints against physicians.
