In order to assist health care professionals, mothers and their families make judicious decisions related to medications and breastfeeding; following are some links to the most current information available:
Caution – Very few mothers need to suspend or cease breastfeeding due to the use of medications. If, after research, it is found necessary to do so, the following links can assist in developing protocols and providing appropriate information, referrals and support to mothers:
Resources for Health Care Professionals:
- LactMed, part of the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET®), is a database of drugs and other chemicals to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed. It includes information on the levels of such substances in breast milk and infant blood, and the possible adverse effects in the nursing infant. All data are derived from the scientific literature and fully referenced.

Infant Risk Center is dedicated to providing up-to-date evidence-based information on the use of medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with a goal is to provide accurate information regarding the risks of exposure to mothers and their babies. By educating healthcare professionals and the general public alike, they aim to reduce the number of birth defects as well as create healthy breastfeeding relationships.
