Welcome to the State of California

Local Rabies Control Activities (LRCA)

The California Code of Regulations, Title 17, Section 2606.4, requires that all counties declared as “rabies areas” by the Director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) maintain a rabies control program. The county health officer must report selected rabies control activities to CDPH. This information is used to assist in evaluation and planning of local rabies control programs CDPH collates data submitted from each county into a Local Rabies Control Activities Annual Report.

Caution should be used when interpreting the LRCA report tables since each county’s counts represent data aggregated  from multiple municipal agencies. Also, reporting efficiency varies across jurisdictions and report years. Counts are not adjusted according to the number of residents nor the number of owned animals within each county. The reported data do not include information from private shelters as these facilities are not required to report under the state regulations.
