Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 100 different types. More than 30 HPV types are sexually transmitted and can infect the genital area. Most people who become infected with HPV will not have any symptoms and will clear the infection on their own. Some of these HPVs are called "high-risk" types and can cause abnormal Pap tests, cervical cancer, and other anogenital cancers. Others are called "low-risk" types, and can cause mild Pap test abnormalities or genital warts, growths or bumps that may appear shaped like cauliflower. A vaccine is available to prevent this infection in females. Tests and treatment are also available.
