Welcome to the State of California

Death Profiles by Zip Code

Death Profiles by ZIP Code are tablulations of the number of deaths to California residents by ZIP Code of decedent’s residence.  Data are aggregated by decedent's sex, age, and cause of death and is obtained from registered death certificates for California residents who died in California and from registered in other states for California residents who died out of state.  Deaths by these key indicators provide significantly more detail than countywide data in monitoring a community’s health status.  Moreover, death data at the ZIP Code level, can be used to perform small area analysis to identify and target areas within cities and counties where public health programs may be needed.

Age Categories

Decedent's age was stratified into the same categories commonly used by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). The categories are: under one year of age; 1 to 4; 5 to 14; 15 to 24; 25 to 34; 35 to 44; 45 to 54; 55 to 64; 65 to 74; 75 to 84; 85 and over

Causes of Death

The causes of death selected for these tables are the leading causes of death among California's residents.  Causes of death are listed in rank order for California as a whole for that year. Therefore, the leading causes and their order may vary from year to year.  The abbreviations used in the tables, along with their meaning and ICD range, are listed below.  Tables for 1989 through 1998 were coded using the Ninth Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9), while tables for 1999 and onward were coded using the Tenth Revision (ICD-10).  Not all causes are tabulated for all years.  For more information on the ICD codes, please go to the NCHS Classification of Diseases webpage.

Trend Data

Multiple years of these data tables by ZIP Code may be used to observe trends within ZIP Codes of interest.  However, when examining trends that include data from the years 1999 through 2004 along with data from the years prior to 1999, be aware that discontinuities in trends may result from the coding changes from ICD-9 to ICD-10.  Some causes of death are named, defined, and coded differently in the two versions.

Data are presented ZIP Codes with five or more deaths.  When examining data in ZIP Codes with very small death numbers (n < 100), caution needs to be exercised because very small numbers may be unreliable and subject to significant variability from one year to the next.  Additional information concerning the data source and limitations is discussed in more detail in the annual report, Vital Statistics of California.

While these tables present data only for a single year, multiple years of these tables may be used to observe trends within ZIP codes of interest.  Additional trend data on leading causes of death can be found in the Reports Section and on the Death Statistical Data Tables page.
