Informatics Workforce Development and Training

This page provides information and training resources for developing informatics competencies in the public health workforce.

The California Department of Public Health and local health departments are preparing for dynamic changes in the healthcare environment through the increasing integration and expansion of health information technology (HIT). To meet the new demands for skills and experience in public health informatics, CDPH is providing opportunities for workforce development and training for employees.  In addition, the Public Health Informatics Program offers placement opportunities for fellows, interns, graduate and undergraduate students from public health, health informatics and related academic programs in fulfillment of practicum and volunteer requirements.  Through these opportunities, students gain hands-on experience and contribute to current public health informatics projects.  These placements also provide benefits to CDPH through the introduction of talented, graduate-level students that bring current, informatics skill sets in support of relevant departmental projects, as well as new potential members of the CDPH workforce.
