Monthly California H1N1 influenza summary data is displayed below which includes the age-specific mortality rate, age-specific hospitalization/fatality rate, weekly number of fatal cases, and weekly number of hospitalized/fatal cases. All data are considered provisional and subject to change. H1N1 influenza data tables and a weekly influenza surveillance report are available which further describe the data.

Age-Specific Mortality Rate (per 100,000 population) of 2009 H1N1 Influenza in California, Reported April 23, 2009 - August 28, 2010

This figure shows the mortality (death) rate (per 100,000 population) of 2009 H1N1 influenza in California, by age group. As in previous months, the overall mortality rate is highest among individuals aged 50-64 years (3.2 influenza fatalities per 100,000 population), and lowest among children aged 1-4 years (0.2 influenza fatalities per 100,000 population). The influenza mortality rate for all ages combined is 1.5 fatalities per 100,000 population.

Weekly Number of Fatal 2009 H1N1 Influenza Cases in California by Week of Death, Week Ending April 28, 2009 - August 28, 2010

This figure shows the number of fatal 2009 H1N1 influenza cases reported in California, by week of death. There was a steady increase in the occurrence of fatal cases from early June through July. The number of fatalities began decreasing from July 29 – September 12, 2009, but a second increase in fatal cases occurred from September 13 – November 7, 2009, with the highest number of fatalities occurring in the two week period of October 25 – November 7, 2009. The number of fatalities has since declined. No deaths due to H1N1 influenza have occurred in California since the week of April 17, 2010.
