About Pathways

The COVID-19 pandemic illustrated the need for a well-trained and versatile public health workforce. To respond, in 2021 the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) partnered to develop and launch a pilot public health workforce development initiative-- the California Pathways into Public Health Initiative (Pathways).

Since then, Pathways has been funded and administered by CDPH to provide training, hands-on work experience, and ongoing support to aspiring public health professionals through two efforts: a Fellowship Program and an Internship Program.

In combination with CDPH, UCSF, and UCLA, California’s local health departments are essential partners for the Fellowship and Internship Programs.
