How to Renew Your CNA Certificate
Follow these steps to renew your Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certificate:
1. Complete the Renewal Application:
2. Provide Proof of Training/CEUs:
- Submit documentation (CDPH 283A)(PDF) to show you completed 48 hours of In-Service Training/Continuing Education Units (CEUs) during your 2-year certification period.
- Complete at least 12 In-Service Training/Continuing Education Units (CEUs) hours per year.
- Use up to 24 hours from a CDPH-approved online program.
3. Submit the Application Package:
You may upload a completed application package to our online portal. Please follow the instructions carefully to prevent your application package being rejected.

4. Monitor Email/Mail:
We encourage you to provide an email address when you submit your application. If an email address is provided all deficiencies will be communicated via email. If no email is provided a letter will be issued via U.S. Postal mail to communicate the items, the department needs to process your application.
After satisfying all the renewal certification requirements and maintaining a clear criminal record, CDPH will issue your CNA certificate
Reactivating Your CNA Certificate
If you have not met renewal requirements and your CNA certificate has been expired for less than two years, you can reactivate it by taking the Competency Evaluation Examination.
Steps to Reactivate if you do not Satisfy the Renewal Requirements:
Make sure to check the "Yes" checkbox for Question 6 in the Reactivation section.

3. Receive Your Competency Evaluation Approval Letter.
If approved, CDPH will send you a letter with instructions on how to schedule the examination.
4. Complete the Examination.
You must take and pass the Competency Evaluation Examination within two years from your certificate’s expiration date with a California Department of Public Health approved testing vendor.
5. Receive Your CNA Certificate.
After passing the exam, maintaining criminal record clearance, and once CDPH receives your results from the testing vendor, they will issue a new CNA certificate.
