How to Complete Your Initial CNA Application

To become a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) in California, follow these steps:

1. Meet the Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • Complete a CDPH-approved training program in California that includes an exam to assess your knowledge and skills in basic patient care.
  • Clear a criminal record check

2. Complete and Submit Your Application:

CNA Initial applications submitted online are processed the same day.

3. Monitor Email/Mail:

We encourage you to provide an email address when you submit your application. If an email address is provided all deficiencies will be communicated via email. If no email is provided a letter will be issued via U.S. Postal mail to communicate the items, the department needs to process your application.

4. Pass the Competency Evaluation Exam:

  • Finish the Competency Evaluation Examination after completing the training program. Your training provider will provide instructions on how to schedule the competency evaluation examination​.
  • Wait at least 30 days for CDPH to receive your exam results from the testing vendor.
