Mammography Facilities
The Registration Unit of the Radiologic Health Branch reviews applications and issues Mammography Machine Certificates so providers can provide mammography services.
Effective October 1, 2025, the RHB will begin issuing digital State Mammography Machine Certificates for Dedicated Breast CT Machines.
A Dedicated Breast CT (DBCT) machine, is a relatively new technology that provides three-dimensional mammography diagnostic procedures without the compression typical to traditional mammography machines. In California, performance of all mammography procedures is regulated by State laws and regulations, declared in the California Health and Safety Code; Title 17, California Code of Regulations, Article 4.5. To request a mammography certificate for a DBCT machine:
- Complete a radiation machine registration form to register a new mammography machine.
- Complete a CDPH 8624 Application for Mammography Machine Certification (PDF).
- Physicist Report completed by a current California approved Mammography Medical Physicist (MMP)
- Proof of at least eight (8) hours of training in surveying CT units completed by the aforementioned MMP.
- CT Accreditation – Proof of Application for CT accreditation
- Submit the application form along with the supporting documents listed above to: RHBRMT@cdph.ca.gov.
Effective January 27, 2025, the RHB will only be issuing digital State Mammography Machine Certificates. Please print a copy of the certificate and post it on the identified machine as required by Title 17, California Code of Regulations sec. 30315.20(a). The certificate must be prominently displayed on the mammography x-ray machine in full view of the patient.
