Silicosis Resources for Local Health DepartmentsPublic health workers at work

The participation of local health departments is essential to identify and report cases of silicosis. We recommend sharing information about silicosis among countertop workers with health care providers in your community. Local health departments may also consider conducting outreach to workers and employers in your community about silicosis and the dangers of silica dust exposure.

Resources developed by local health departments are listed below, and you can find educational materials and other information for specific audiences from our silicosis home page.

Silicosis Cases in Countertop Workers Continue to Rise, as Silicosis Becomes a Reportable Disease in California, 11/17/2025

As of June 2025, silicosis is a reportable disease in California. Providers who diagnose or treat patients with silicosis must report cases to the local health department in the jurisdiction where the patient resides.

As with other reportable diseases, local health departments that receive silicosis case reports should report them to CDPH via  the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE) or alternate specified mechanism.

The CDPH Occupational Health Branch will receive these reports and provide case follow-up, unless the local health department wishes to do so.

For technical assistance with reporting, local health departments can email silicosis@cdph.ca.gov.
