OCCUPATIONAL LEAD POISONING PREVENTION PROGRAM

Worker washing handsWashing facilities and break areas

Employers should promote worker hygiene practices and designate break areas as follows:

  • Inform workers about regulated areas where they are exposed to lead at or above the 10 micrograms per deciliter (μg/dl) permissible exposure limit.
  • Provide washing facilities that include warm water, soap, and clean towels. When feasible, provide shower facilities.
  • Require workers to wash their hands, forearms, and face before eating, drinking, smoking, applying cosmetics, or leaving work.
  • Provide clean break and eating areas free from lead contamination.
  • Provide a clean changing area with separate storage for work and street clothes and shoes.
  • Don’t allow workers to leave the worksite wearing their work clothes or shoes. Provide bins, lockers, or plastic bags with warning labels for storing contaminated work clothes and shoes before leaving the worksite.
  • Wash work clothing at the worksite or use a commercial laundry service, when possible.
