Investing in Public Health Infrastructure

California is making important changes to fill gaps in public health through the Future of Public Health (FoPH) funding. CDPH’s Regional Public Health Office (RPHO) leads the distribution of FoPH funds to the 61 local health jurisdictions (LHJs) to help them: 

  • ​​​Hire and keep skilled public health staff
  • Modernize outdated systems and equipment
  • Respond faster to local health needs and emergencies
  • Provide reliable services that keep people safe and healthy

What's the Impact?

Across California, LHJs are putting these investments to work. The stories shared show how funds are being used and how it is working to strengthen services. They also help improve health outcomes of the communities they serve. ​

  • 1,163 permanent positions have been added to the public health workforce.
  • 94% of positions have been filled focusing on infectious disease, chronic disease and lab capacity.
  • 40 LHJs have made progress on public health accreditation and community health assessments and improvement pla​ns.​​
