The San Francisco Bay Area is home to the Golden Gate Bridge, Silicon Valley and Napa Valley. Its 13 local health jurisdictions cover about 7% of California’s land. They serve about 9.5 million people as of 2025, approximately 24% of the state’s population. Public health priorities include climate change, workforce development, harm reduction approaches and emergency preparedness. 

How Future of Public Health Is Making an Impact

  • The region expanded its public health workforce with 210 positions.
  • Programs for infectious disease prevention, surveillance and laboratories have been enhanced.
  • Funds helped prepare for urban disasters, battle climate change and community health programs.​
