Laboratory Opportunities
Laboratory Science classifications are responsible for preparing specimens and materials, operating specialized laboratory equipment, developing and maintaining testing procedures, and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of results. The Laboratory Field Services (LFS) branch upholds quality standards in clinical and public health laboratories through licensing, inspections, education, and proficiency testing. Serving as the key connection between public health and accurate laboratory testing, LFS oversees laboratory operations as well as the licensing and certification of scientists and testing personnel across California. The Microbial Disease Laboratory (MDL), which is part of CLS, further supports state and local efforts by providing reference diagnostics, assisting with outbreak investigations, testing Select Agents, and training future public health microbiologists.
