The purpose of this memo is to inform ADAP and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Assistance Program (PrEP-AP) Enrollment Workers (EW) about updates to the ADAP Enrollment System (AES) for collecting Intersex/Variations in Sex Characteristics (VSC) demographic data.
Background
AB 1163 changed the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Disparities Reduction Act. It now requires the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to collect voluntary self-identified demographic data on intersex individuals and variations in sex characteristics when collecting information about race and ethnicity.
Update
Effective May 4, 2026, the AES demographics tab will reflect the following additional question:
Were you born with a variation in your physical sex characteristics?
(This is sometimes called being Intersex or having a difference in sex development (DSD).)
