Why is it important?

If you test positive for COVID-19, it is very important to anonymously alert others you may have exposed. By doing so, they can quarantine and get tested. This allows them to protect their communities and to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Did you receive a text message from the California Department of Public Health?

If you tested positive, you may have received a text message from the California Department of Public Health. In that message there is a link that you can click to notify others. Click the link and follow the instructions to the end to alert those you may have exposed.

What do I do now?

If you get a positive result from a lab test, you should receive a text message from the California Department of Public Health. This message will include a link that will allow you to anonymously notify others you may have exposed to COVID-19. By clicking on the link, you can protect your community by encouraging others to quarantine and get tested. Follow the instructions below on how to anonymously notify those you may have exposed.

* If you are a parent or legal guardian reporting a positive COVID-19 test result for someone between the ages of 13-17, please be sure to report the result via your teen's phone. This will ensure that anyone your teen may have exposed will receive an anonymous exposure alert.

iOS

CA Notify requires iOS version 12.5 (iPhone 5s, 5, 6 Plus) or 13.7 or newer (iPhone 7 and up).

  1. Depending on your phone settings, either:
    1. Open the system alert, if you receive one, OR
    2. Tap the link in the text message you receive
  2. Read the instructions that follow and tap "Continue"
  3. Answer the questions related to your symptoms
  4. Tap the "Share" button to anonymously notify others

Requires Android version 6.0 or newer. The CA Notify app should also be updated to the latest version in the Google Play store.

  1. Depending on your phone settings, either:
    1. Open the system alert, if you receive one, OR
    2. Tap the link in the text message you receive
  2. Read the instructions that follow and tap "Continue"
  3. Enter the date your symptoms began and tap "Share" (if you did not have symptoms, tap "Skip")
  4. Tap the "Share" button to anonymously notify others

What do I do now?

Not everyone who tests positive will receive a text message from the California Department of Public Health. Some examples of this include: if you tested at home, are from outside of California, or got your results from your provider.

If you did not get a text message for any reason, you can request one by providing information about your positive result using CA Notify on your phone or by calling toll-free 1 (833) 422‑4255. Follow the instructions below on how to anonymously notify those you may have exposed.

iOS

Requires iOS version 14.7 or newer(iPhone 7 and up).

  1. Go to your phone Settings and scroll down to Exposure Notifications
  2. Tap "Share a Positive COVID-19 Diagnosis"
  3. Read the instructions and tap "Continue"
  4. Enter your COVID-19 test date
  5. Enter your phone number, check the box, and tap "Continue"
  6. Get confirmation that verification code is sent
  7. Depending on your phone settings, either:
    1. Open the system alert, if you receive one, OR
    2. Tap the link in the text message you receive
  8. Read the instructions that follow and tap "Continue"
  9. Answer the questions related to your symptoms
  10. Tap the "Share" button to anonymously notify others

  1. Open the CA Notify app and tap "Share your test result to help stop the spread of COVID-19"
  2. Tap the "I need a code button"
  3. Enter your phone number
  4. Enter your COVID-19 test date and tap the "Send Code" button
  5. Depending on your phone settings, either:
    1. Open the system alert, if you receive one, OR
    2. Tap the link in the text message you receive
  6. Read the instructions that follow and tap "Continue"
  7. Enter the date your symptoms began and tap "Share" (if you did not have symptoms, tap "Skip")
  8. Tap the "Share" button to anonymously notify others
