Enhanced Barrier Precautions

Enhanced Barrier Precautions (EBP) are infection prevention practices to prevent the spread of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in SNFs. CDPH has retired Enhanced Standard Precautions guidance and adopted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s EBP guidance and terminology​. Refer to AFL 24-15 for details, and see Enhanced Barrier Precautions: Additional Considerations for California SNFs​ (PDF) for additional guidance on EBP.​ ​

SNF Infection Preventionist Requirements 

California SNFs are required to have a full-time, dedicated Infection Preventionist (IP) 40 hours per week. SNFs may reference the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) All-Facilities Letter (AFL) 20‒84 and CDPH AFL 21-51​ for more information on how to fulfill this requirement.
