WIC Fruits and Vegetables Benefit Increase

What is the WIC Fruits and Vegetables Benefit?

WIC families receive a monthly cash-value benefit on their California WIC Card for fruits and vegetables purchases. Families can buy fresh, dried, canned, and frozen fruits and vegetables in any brand, type, or combination with their Fruits and Vegetables Benefit. Organic fruits and vegetables are included.

What is the latest update to the WIC Fruits and Vegetables Benefit?

The benefit increase that started in October 2021 has been extended through September 2022!

The increased dollar amounts will continue to be:

  • $24 per month for children ages 1 to 5

  • $43 per month for pregnant and postpartum individuals

  • $47 per month for fully and partially breastfeeding individuals

For example, a family with 1 breastfeeding parent and 3 eligible children would get $119 ($47+24+24+24) each month through September for fruits and vegetables.

How were the benefit levels for this temporary benefit increase decided?

The benefit levels by participant category (children, pregnant and postpartum, and breastfeeding) are based on independent scientific recommendations from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). The benefit levels are also consistent with longstanding advice in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and adjusted for inflation.

How long will WIC families get the new temporary increase?

The extension to the Fruits and Vegetables Benefit increase will last for 6 months, from April 2022 through September 2022.

Each monthly benefit is good for 30 days from the date they are issued. For example, benefits issued on September 30, 2022 can be used through October 29, 2022.
