Therapy Facilities FAQs
1. We are planning to acquire a therapy linear accelerator (above 500 kVp) intended for use in the healing arts. How do I register a therapeutic x-ray machine?
Step 1: Apply for an Authorization for Physical Measurements (See Authorization for Physical Measurements – Checklist (PDF)).
Step 2: Apply for an Authorization to Treat (See Authorization to Treat – Checklist (PDF) and to register the machine, please use the online Radiation Machine Registration portal. Please read the instructions on which option to use.
Step 3: Apply for Final Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) Authorization (See Final IMRT Authorization – Checklist (PDF))
Refer to the Guidance for Therapeutic X-Ray Equipment above 500 kVp (PDF) for more detailed information. You can also view California regulations for Therapeutic X-Ray Installations in Title 17 of the California Code of Regulations (17 CCR) § 30312, Therapeutic X-Ray Installations.
2. When should I register my therapeutic x-ray machine?
The facility needs to register the radiation machine within 30 days of acquisition. Please see above on information on how to register it.
3. How can I find out the technical aspects of the machine (e.g. number of x-ray tubes)?
Please refer to the manufacturer’s manual or contact the manufacturer or vendor of the radiation machine. In terms of registering the correct number of x-ray tubes, it is possible for the machine to have only one x-ray tube or to have two x-ray tubes. Therapeutic x-ray machines that have two x-ray tubes typically have a simulator or image guidance system used in conjunction with the linear accelerator to aid in precisely positioning external beam radiation during treatment.
4. What is the processing time for an authorization to Measure/Treat/IMRT?
Please allow up to 60 days for an Authorization for Physical Measurements and 30 days for an Authorization to Treat patients, and 30 days for the Final IMRT Authorization.
5. Do I need to notify the RHB of any changes and, if so, what is the approved method of notification?
To report changes to your existing registration information (e.g. address changes, facility name changes, changes to the room name, ownership changes, etc.), please use the online Radiation Machine Registration portal and only use the Update Registration option. Changes in ownership must be reported; however, please use the Ownership Change option. In addition, you are required to apply for an amended authorization letter. To apply, email information on your changes to RHBRMT@cdph.ca.gov.
