Radiation Machine Registration & Compliance - Covid-19 Guidance

1.  Radiation Safety Inspections

The RHB will continue to conduct radiation safety inspections.  To limit the time inspectors are physically in the facility, these inspections will include remote inspection components.

2.  Guidance Related to Certification and Permitting in Radiologic Technology.

3.  X-ray Equipment Survey Guidance - The following guidance is effective March 18, 2020.

In response to increasing limitations and restrictions of physicist access to imaging facilities due to the COVID-19 outbreak and travel restrictions, the State will extend, for medical use, the annual medical physicist equipment survey windows as outlined below, and for non-human use, specific survey windows as outlined below.  Inquiries regarding extensions to federal or accreditation requirements should be directed to those entities. The State contact is Lisa Russell (Lisa.Russell@CDPH.CA.GOV). The FDA MQSA contact is Thanh Andrews (Thanh.Andrews@FDA.HHS.GOV).

Annual Medical Physicist CT and Fluoroscopy Equipment Surveys:

May be extended to a 18-month window from date of last equipment evaluation. Facilities needing a longer extension and those who are unable to obtain physics testing or acceptance testing on new units are asked to contact the State for further guidance.

Annual Medical Physicist Mammography Equipment Surveys:

May be extended to a 18-month window from the date of the last annual survey.  Facilities needing a longer extension and those who are unable to obtain physics testing or acceptance testing on new units are asked to contact the State for further guidance.

Annual Medical Physicist X-Ray Therapy Equipment Calibration/Surveys:

Facilities needing an extension are asked to contact the State for further guidance. The State will evaluate these requests on a case-by-case basis.

Annual Evaluation on Cabinet X-ray Systems (non-human use) required by 17 CCR 30337(e):

Surveys on Cabinet X-ray Systems may be extended to a 18-month window from the date of the last annual evaluation that is required by 17 CCR 30337(e).

Surveys Performed in Shielded-Room Radiography (non-human use):

Surveys recommended by the manufacturer may be extended six months beyond the recommended interval based on the date of the last survey.

Surveys Performed in Field Radiography (non-human use) with a radiation machine that is not cable of exceeding an operating potential of 150 kVp:

Surveys recommended by the manufacturer may be extended six months beyond the recommended interval based on the date of the last survey.  This extension shall not apply to use of a radiation machine that is capable of exceeding an operating potential 150 kVp.
