Limited Podiatric Radiography Educational Programs (LPREP)
An approved LPREP is an educational program that allows a licensed podiatrist to train an individual (e.g., medical assistant) to take X-rays of the lower extremity so that the individual may then apply for a
limited podiatric radiography (LPR) permit. Though this educational program may be similar to on-the-job training (OJT) programs, it is not a self-initiated study or OJT program.
LPREP is a program where required education and training is completed under the oversight of the approved LPREP's authorized podiatrist. The processes to obtain approval as an LPREP is provided further below.
How to become an approved LPREP
Following is some critical information to keep in mind. It is not an exhaustive list:
- Please read 17 CCR 30427 and 30427.2, the main regulations. Definitions of terms are found in 17 CCR 30400, but other regulations may apply.
- Training may begin only when you receive approval from RHB.
- Training is limited to a maximum of one year for any one student, and one student per licensed authorized podiatrist.
- The authorized podiatrist:
- Must hold a current and valid radiography supervisor and operator permit.
- Is responsible for:
- All training and education of the student.
- Ensuring the student's training/education occurs during the approval period.
- Providing direct oversight and indirect oversight, as defined in 17 CCR 30400, to the student while the student is in the LPREP program.
- Determining the student is competent to perform procedures under indirect oversight. (17 CCR 30427.)
- Ensuring the student does not operate equipment or perform procedures that are listed in 17 CCR 30447, except that digital radiography is authorized.
- Must issue to the student a completion document with specific information.
- The student must complete ALL training requirements DURING the LPREP authorization period. Training the student obtains outside of that period will not be accepted.
- Regarding didactic education, the approved LPREP may use the didactic education material provided by the California Podiatric Medical Associations's (CPMA), or may use the LPREP's own material if that material has been approved by RHB. Contact CPMA regarding their material. However, the authorized podiatrist is responsible for ensuring the entire course is completed during the approval period. A student's application that indicates the course was completed outside of the LPREP approval period will be denied.
- For clinical procedures to be credited, the procedures must be performed under indirect oversight, not direct oversight. See the link above to 17 CCR 30400 defining these terms.
- The LPREP is subject to specific recordkeeping and notification requirements.

Note: The LPR permit does not allow the holder to operate any fluoroscopy, mobile X-ray, CT equipment used in podiatry offices and any other medical facility or perform any form of contrast injections as per
17 CCR 30447.
