Managing Stress and Burnout at Work

As the year winds down and holidays approach, many workers face growing demands at work and at home leading to stress, fatigue, and burnout.

Burnout is more than feeling tired it's a form of chronic workplace stress that can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion, reduced performance, and mental health challenges. It affects workers in all industries and roles, and addressing it is critical to a healthy, productive workplace.

Recognizing the Signs of Burnout:

  • Feeling drained or emotionally exhausted
  • Decreased motivation or job satisfaction
  • Trouble concentrating or sleeping
  • Increased feelings of cynicism or detachment from work

    What Can Workers Do?

Set boundaries – Protect your time and energy by saying “no" when needed.

Take regular breaks – Short pauses throughout the day improve focus and lower stress levels.

Check in with yourself – Reflect on how you're feeling and seek support if you need it.

Make time for rest and connection – Even small moments of relaxation or social interaction can help recharge your mental health.

How Employers Can Help:

  • Promote a culture that encourages open conversations about mental health
  • Offer flexible work options when possible
  • Provide access to Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) or mental health benefits
  • Recognize and appreciate employee efforts year-round, not just during the holiday

Let's prioritize wellness and compassion as we head into the holiday season. Healthy minds lead to safer, stronger, and more sustainable workplaces for everyone.
