Breathe Easy: Respiratory Protection and Fit Testing

Whether in healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, or emergency response, workers exposed to airborne hazards need properly fitted respirators. A poorly fitting respirator can give a false sense of protection and leave workers vulnerable.

What You Should Know:

  • Respirators used in the workplace should be approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
  • Tight-fitting respirators (like disposable N95s, elastomerics) should be fit tested before use.
  • Fit testing should be repeated annually or when facial changes occur.
  • When respirators are required, employers must have a written Respiratory Protection Program (RPP).
  • Workers should receive training on use, maintenance, and limitations of their respirators.

Masks vs. Respirators: What's the Difference?

Cloth and surgical masks are intended to protect others by blocking large droplets, while respirators like disposable N95s and elastomerics are designed to protect the wearer by filtering out fine particles and removing airborne contaminants. Respirators must seal tightly to the face and be properly fit tested to be effective.

Fit testing isn't just a compliance checkbox, it's life-saving practice. Unfortunately, many people do not have ready access to respirator fit testing. Through the PROTECT Program, our branch is currently working with community partners to develop comprehensive respirator training and fit testing for members of the public and workers that aren't offered a traditional RPP.
