Creating Safer Homes for Healthier Communities

Some everyday products in your home could be putting your health at risk in ways you may not realize. Household products — like some mattresses, cookware, and skin creams — may have chemicals that can cause lasting harm to your health. Knowing what to look out for helps you make safer choices to protect yourself and your community.

To address these risks, EHIB works to promote health and equity by helping people lower harmful exposures and create safer conditions where they live, work, and play. EHIB partners with residents, health workers, and policymakers to share clear information and useful tools that help Californians make safer choices in their homes. 

EHIB provides practical information on common products and exposures, including:​

Mattresses with Fiberglass:​

Learn how​​ to spot mattresses that may contain fiberglass. If the
cover is taken off or damaged on these mattresses, fiberglass from
inside can get out and cause skin, eye, or breathing problems.

Skin Creams with Mercury:​

Find out how to identify and avoid creams that may contain
mercury — a toxic metal that can harm the kidneys, brain, and
nervous system.

Vaping and E-Cigarettes:​

Understand the dangers of vaping and e-cigarette products.
Vaping can release chemicals into your body that can damage
your lungs and cause serious breathing problems.​
