Advice on Environmental Exposures

California Poison Control System: Delivers fast, free, expert advice (24 hours) for health professionals and the public: 1-800-222-1222. See 24-hour advice line factsheet (pdf). Publishes Poisoning and Drug Overdose, a reference manual for health care providers.

Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU), Region 9: A network of medical experts on children's environmental health across California. PEHSU's Region 9 office is based at the University of California, San Francisco.

Toxic substances resources for toxicological and health professionals (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention): Provides information and resources on specific hazardous chemicals and substances.

Case definitions for chemical poisoning (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention): Provides chemical-specific clinical descriptions and laboratory (biological or environmental) criteria for diagnosis.

Foodborne Chemicals and Toxins

Chemical contaminants and pesticides in food (U.S. Food and Drug Administration): Provides detailed information on potential contaminants in food via environmental uptake, pesticides, or processing as well as natural toxins.

Toxicological Outbreak Toolkits

Toxicological Outbreak Investigation Course and Toolkit (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention): Provides methods, information, resources and learning activities to build the knowledge and skills of public health professionals who investigate non-infectious toxicological outbreaks.

Manual for Investigating Suspected Outbreaks of Illnesses of Possible Chemical Etiology (World Health Organization): Provides methods and information for investigating non-infectious toxicological outbreaks that may be of chemical origin. Describes the importance of a structured, coordinated, and collaborative multidisciplinary and multi-agency approach at local, state, and national levels.
