Adult Lead Exposure: Non-Occupational Sources and Health Risks
People encounter lead in everyday life through the products they use, the places they live and hobbies and activities they practice. These sources can introduce lead into the body, which can harm vital organs such as the brain, kidneys and heart. In most of these cases, there are no clear signs of lead, and people might not realize these types of exposure (when lead enters the body) can pose a serious health risk.
Our focus at the Community Health Education Unit is on adults over 21 who are exposed to lead outside of workplaces. We conduct statewide surveillance, provide health education, test products and partner with communities to share clear, culturally responsive information that supports safer choices. Through this work, we help Californians recognize and avoid hidden sources of lead in their homes and daily lives.
