Adult Lead Poisoning and Health

Health Problems and Symptoms of Lead Poisoning
Lead exposure can cause a range of health effects in adults. Once lead enters the body, it can interfere with the brain, kidneys and cardiovascular system. Adults may experience symptoms such as:
Headaches
| Fatigue or irrability
| Difficulty sleeping
| Trouble concentrating or memory issues
| Increased blood pressure
|
If left unaddressed, lead can build up in the body and contribute to more serious health concerns. Ongoing exposure can also lead to more serious health problems, including:
 Kidney damage
| Harm to the brain or nerves
| Effects on fertility and pregnancy
|
Finding and removing hidden sources of lead is essential to preventing harm and supporting safer choices for California’s communities.
Lead Risks for Seniors and Older Adults
Older adults may be more vulnerable to lead exposure because age-related changes in the body can make it harder for the body to recover. Even low levels of lead can make balance more difficult, slow down thinking and memory or worsen existing heart and kidney problems.
Most Vulnerable Populations
While adults can be seriously affected by lead, children, pregnant people and infants are the most at risk. They can be harmed by very small amounts of lead, which can irreversibly impact growth, learning and development. To learn more about protecting children, visit CDPH’s

When to get tested
Get a blood test if you may have been exposed to lead or have symptoms. Testing is the only way to know your lead level.
