The Impact of Violence on California

In 2022, there were nearly 7,000 violent deaths among Californian residents, with 51% of these deaths due to firearms (1,673 suicides and 1,647 homicides). Firearms accounted for 73% of homicides and 39% of suicides in California in 2021.

Deaths represent only a fraction of the societal burden of gun violence. Non-fatal firearm assaults outnumber deaths by at least two to one, with many others exposed directly or indirectly. In 2022, non-fatal violence-related injuries resulted in over 30,000 hospitalizations and 160,000 emergency department visits.

Death and injuries due to violence are only the ā€œtip of the icebergā€ of harm to individuals, families, and communities.

Tip of the Iceberg Chart

The immediate, lasting, and multigenerational effects of violence ultimately influence society. Violence adversely affects Californian’s public health and welfare in all stages of life, through premature death, injury, disability, medical costs, lost productivity, individual and community trauma, and social and economic destabilization. Additionally, communities of color are disproportionately impacted; concentrated, segregated areas of poverty grow; and community resilience and trust are diminished, resulting in persistent inequities.

Disparities

Though violence affects all Californians, there are significant disparities in the burden of and exposure to violence across socioeconomic and population demographics and across communities. These inequities are influenced by complex and interconnecting factors, including socioeconomic status, systemic racism, access to education and healthcare, community resources and other social determinants of health.
